The mysterious disappearance of Sao MU

Despite being heavily promoted during the summer transfer window, young defender Diego Leon has yet to play any official minutes for Manchester United this season.

In fact, the Paraguayan player has primarily been training and playing for the U21 team, raising questions about the personnel utilization plan of the Old Trafford club.

Given that Manchester United's left-back position has been consistently problematic, Leon's lack of opportunity makes the situation even more noteworthy. Currently, Luke Shaw is the most stable option on the left flank, having started all 30 of the team's Premier League matches this season. However, the English defender recently had to leave early in two consecutive games due to signs of overload.

Meanwhile, backup option Patrick Dorgu is sidelined due to a hamstring injury and is expected to return only next month. Some sources even suggest this player might be used long-term as a winger rather than a defender.

In the 1-2 loss to Newcastle United, Noussair Mazraoui, originally a right-back, also had to leave the pitch in the second half. Tyrell Malacia was substituted in, but the Dutch player's performance was not convincing. He allowed William Osula too much space before the striker scored the winning goal for Newcastle in the 90th minute.

Malacia endured a difficult period at Old Trafford, missing the entire 2023/24 season due to a serious knee injury requiring two surgeries. He was absent from Manchester United's matches for a total of 550 days. Since his return late in 2024, the 26-year-old defender has only made about 10 appearances for the team.

In this context, many recall that Manchester United actually recruited another left-back in the summer: young talent Diego Leon. The 2007-born player was introduced at Old Trafford alongside Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko before the friendly match against ACF Fiorentina. However, after that symbolic debut, Leon virtually vanished from the first team.

Under the tenure of Coach Ruben Amorim, Leon was on the bench four times but never got a chance to play. His last appearance in the match squad was during the 2-0 victory over Sunderland in October.

Since then, the young Paraguayan defender has mainly played for Manchester United's U21 team. According to internal sources, the coaching staff believes training and playing with the youth team will give Leon more playing opportunities during his development phase.

In reality, Leon was quite highly rated during the pre-season period. Coach Amorim then remarked that this player "has the potential to become a very good player" due to his solid physical foundation and intelligent playing mindset. However, Leon's subsequent performances in friendlies against West Ham United, AFC Bournemouth, and Leeds United were not sufficiently convincing.

At 18 years old, Leon still has plenty of time to develop. Nevertheless, his inability to compete for a spot in Manchester United's first team indicates that this young defender's path at Old Trafford remains long and challenging.
