Tottenham experienced one of the worst starts in Champions League history. when goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was substituted after only 17 minutes in the 2-5 loss to Atletico Madrid. Coach Igor Tudor's shocking decision drew further attention as a video emerged showing captain Cristian Romero seemingly communicating with the coach just before the goalkeeper was withdrawn.

In the first leg of the round of 16 at the Metropolitano, Tottenham quickly fell into crisis within the first 15 minutes. The 22-year-old goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, unexpectedly given the starting opportunity by Tudor over Guglielmo Vicario, had a forgettable performance.

The first mistake occurred at minute 6 when Kinsky slipped while handling the ball, allowing Marcos Llorente to score the opening goal for Atletico. Before stabilizing, Tottenham conceded a second goal as Antoine Griezmann capitalized on defensive errors to double the lead.
