Liverpool's opponent demands rule change ahead of Champions League showdown

Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk urges UEFA to revise the yellow card regulations in the Champions League, with seven players from the Turkish side at risk of being suspended prior to the Liverpool clash.

Galatasaray's coach Okan Buruk has criticized UEFA's disciplinary card regulations just before the crucial encounter with Liverpool FC in the UEFA Champions League round of 16. The two teams will meet in Istanbul for the first leg, both nearly at full strength. However, Galatasaray faces a significant threat as seven players are on the verge of suspension if they receive another yellow card.

According to current Champions League rules, a player is suspended upon accumulating three yellow cards in the competition. This puts several key players of the Turkish club in a precarious situation, needing just one more yellow card to miss the second leg.

During the pre-match press conference, Coach Buruk openly stated that UEFA should reconsider this regulation, especially as the number of Champions League matches increases: “UEFA should consider adjusting the yellow card rule since the number of matches has grown. Currently, yellow cards are only cleared from the semi-finals onward, which forces many players to compete under immense pressure.”Buruk shared.

Notably, among the players at risk of suspension is star striker Victor Osimhen, who has scored 7 goals in this season's Champions League. Also included are goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, defenders Ismail Jakobs, Davinson Sanchez, Abdulkerim Bardakci, and attacking players Roland Sallai and Noa Lang.

Buruk admitted this situation poses considerable challenges for Galatasaray in tactical preparations: “The toughest part is that many crucial players in defense, goalkeeper, and even attack are facing suspension risks. We must perform at our best while trying to avoid unnecessary penalties,” he added.

On the other side of the pitch, Liverpool's coach Arne Slot has only two players in a similar situation: Curtis Jones and Conor Bradley. With the pressure from the card rules, the clash between Galatasaray and Liverpool promises to be even more tense, as the home team must not only face a strong opponent but also be wary of losing multiple key players.
