Jazz really like Reeves! Lakers could sign-and-trade for Kessler, even involving Giannis

On March 11 Beijing time, multiple media outlets previously reported that the Jazz are interested in Reeves. B/R reporter Pincus proposed a possible sign-and-trade scenario: sending Austin Reeves to the Jazz, acquiring Kessler to address the Lakers' need at the center position.

“In theory, a sign-and-trade could be used to obtain Walker Kessler, with Kessler plus some draft picks going to the Lakers, and Reeves going to the Jazz,” Pincus explained. “The Lakers would use the salary space from sending Reeves to acquire Kessler. If the salary matching is sufficient, they could even make it a multi-team trade, in which case some draft picks from Utah could also be transferred to Milwaukee, thus involving Giannis.”

Kessler, 24 years old and standing 2.18 meters tall, is a rim-protecting interior player. Over the past few months, he has been consistently linked to trade rumors with the Lakers. If the Lakers management decides to restructure the roster, this young center could potentially fill the team's defensive gap.

Pincus also added that the Jazz's admiration for Reeves has long been no secret within the league.

“From sources I trust, I've heard that the Jazz really, really like Reeves,”he said. “I think that's not surprising. And the rumors about the Lakers and Kessler have been circulating for a long time too.”

Reeves' value continues to rise

Reeves' market value has significantly increased, mainly due to his outstanding performance this season. This Lakers guard averages 23.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game, and has become a reliable offensive initiator in the Lakers' backcourt.

His excellent performance has earned him the opportunity for a major contract. Reeves is expected to decline his $14.9 million player option for next season, become a full free agent in 2026, and is likely to receive a top-tier contract.

The Lakers can offer him a 5-year contract worth approximately $241 million, while other competing teams can offer up to a 4-year contract worth about $178.5 million.

Teams potentially pursuing Reeves may not be limited to the Jazz. The Wizards, Clippers, Nets, Bulls, and others are also expected to have salary cap space next summer.

Lakers still hold the主动权

Despite the rumors, if the Lakers wish, they remain in a favorable position to retain Reeves. His on-court chemistry with Doncic has helped stabilize the Lakers' offense this season. Currently, the Lakers are ranked 5th in the West with a record of 39 wins and 25 losses.

With James' future uncertain, the team may enter a transitional period, and the Lakers might view Reeves as a core building block rather than a trade asset.

If that is indeed the case, then the Jazz's interest will ultimately depend on one simple factor: whether the Lakers are willing to let go of their most efficient guard and allow him to enter the free market.
